Recently, the status of the iOS 5.1 untethered Jailbreak has been the topic of choice on BestTechInfo. If you’re unaware of the situation, to briefly summarize, pod2g (an iOS security expert and hacker) has been collaborating with other iOS hackers to create the next untethered Jailbreak utility (you can find all the details on tethered versus untethered Jailbreaks here).
Since pod2g started working on the new Jailbreak utility, he’s made significant progress by discovering all the required exploits, bypassing ASLR (a computer security method) and uncovering two additional exploits.
However, shortly after bypassing ASLR, pod2g started having second thoughts about creating a 5.1 Jailbreak utility and “burning” the discovered exploits in the process. To lighten the burden of choosing, pod2g initiated a poll on his blog to let the Jailbreak community decide whether or not the exploits should be saved for iOS 6.
The poll is now officially closed and the option to utilize the exploits as soon as possible by creating a 5.1 untethered Jailbreak utility won by a substantial number of votes (106,474 vs. 55,795).
While the decision to proceed with the development of a 5.1 Jailbreak has been made by the community, pod2g has yet to comment on the outcome of the poll and it will likely be some time before a utility is made available.
If you’d like more information on the Jailbreak situation, you can find all the details here. Stay tuned for more Jailbreak related news and for first coverage when the untethered utility is released.
